My Background
I have received my undergraduate training in the Social Sciences, where I took classes in Critical Migration Theory, Border Studies, Urban Sociology, and Gender. Outside of the classroom I read widely about African History and Political Theory. In my thesis I compared different theories of African Socialism and concluded that most were best understood with the Marxist concept of Bonapartism. From there, I undertook a thorough study of global labor history, imperialism, colonialism and slavery and wrote my Master’s thesis in African Studies on class formation, identity and everyday culture in Zanzibar from the abolition of slavery until the eve of revolution in 1964. I also devoted term papers to John Okello, Hashil Seif Hashil, and Abdulrahman Mohamed Babu, and traced different narratives regarding the revolution and its class content.
Since I had also given workshops about German colonial history, I developed a stronger interest for the debate about restitution and began to engage more theoretically with museums and cultural institutions, leading to several roles in academia and the art sector, where I encountered numerous other sources of inspiration. In 2025, my first academic contribution was published with De Gruyter, as well as two articles I have written for exhibition readers.
Currently, I research media and technology from a Black Studies perspective, combined with my interest in publishing, journalism, and information science. As of March 2026, I am joining the ERC-funded project WAVEMATTERS as a student assistant at the Institute of European Ethnology.
